Biodiversity month recap

Did you know that September was Biodiversity Month? Every month is Biodiversity Month at Wildlife Unlimited! Here are some of the things we did this September to help protect East Gippsland’s unique biodiversity.

Community education

We were honoured to host a Community Wildlife Workshop at Newlands Arm Landcare: an evening focused on learning about Tipping the ecological balance with a focus on introduced predators and threatened species. This workshop was funded in part by East Gippsland Shire Council's community grants.

Reducing deer impacts

We have a dedicated team spending their evenings working hard to reduce the density of deer in areas of high biodiversity value, supporting the recovery of sensitive vegetation, including rainforest and alpine peatlands.

Helping Hands for Glossies

Esther delivered her final presentation wrapping up the stellar Helping Hands for Sheoaks project. This community project resulted in the planting of thousands of sheoaks on properties creating an important Black Sheoak corridor from Lakes Entrance and Marlo through to Wangarabell and Genoa.

H5N1 preparedness

Staff have been completing bird flu online training to familiarise themselves with current policy and guidance so we can be on the front foot to assist with emergency response if required.

Grant writing

For us at Wildlife Unlimited September turned into Grant Writing month with several of our team working hard to secure funding for a couple of key education and biodiversity projects.

Game duck abundance surveys

We are deep in the planning and logistics for delivery of the GMA funded statewide duck surveys during October. These multi-year surveys complement aerial counts providing abundance estimates for game species in Victoria. With the arrival of H5N1 this information is more important than ever.
